When students majoring in Communication Studies apply for financial aid through the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, they will be considered for scholarships from UT, the College of Communication and Information, and the School of Communication Studies.

Communications Studies Scholarships

The School of Communication Studies offers several scholarships for students who display exceptional skill and work ethic. Each scholarship is unique in its background and purpose. View scholarship details below; students will be considered for scholarships when they apply for financial aid through the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Charles J. McClung Prize Fund

This prize is awarded to participants in the Charles J. McClung Speech Contest, the largest public speaking contest in the Southeast. The contest takes place semi-annually, in the spring and fall, featuring unique themes every year. This scholarship also applies to Smokey Talks competition.
Deadline: TBA

Amount:

  • 1st place – $300
  • 2nd place – $150
  • 3rd place – $75
  • 4th place – $50
  • 5th place – $50

Criteria: Communication studies major or enrolled in Communication Studies 210 course. All instructors of Public Speaking will announce the contest and prepare students for entry.

Smokey Talks Contest:

Criteria: Communication Studies major or enrolled in 240 Business & Professional. All instructors of Business and Professional will announce the contest and prepare students for entry.

Michael Kenneth Hamrick Scholarship

The Michael Kenneth Hamrick Scholarship was created by the parents of alumni Michael Hamrick to honor his memory. Michael passed away suddenly in 2008.

Nathan Boals Memorial Scholarship

The Nathan Boals Memorial Scholarship was created in 2007 by the parents of former student Nathan Boals to honor his memory.

Judy Flanagan Scholarship

Judy Flanagan was director of special events at UT Knoxville for over 15 years. She was passionate about special events and spent her life serving others.

Faye Julian Scholarship

Faye Julian was a former School of Communication Studies professor and Dean of the College of Communication & Information.

Honeycutt Scholarship

Created by School of Communication Studies alumna Alexanderia Gambrell (‘03) and her husband, Jordan Gambrell.

Maria Felt-William Haas Scholarship

Created by School of Communication Studies professor and former School director, Dr. John Haas and his wife Dr. Cindy Haas, in memory of his parents, Maria and William.
